Life After Ian: Accessible Music Therapy For All

In the wake of tragedy, Florida communities know how to band together to take care of each other. This is just one of so many reasons we care so deeply for our clients - their dedication to their families and their neighbors is unmatched. Most recently, we’ve seen the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ian on many of our local neighborhoods, revealing the importance of community, kindness, and connection more than ever.

As music therapists and passionate music enthusiasts, we’ve seen the tangible impact that music therapy can have on those experiencing hardship, trauma, and stress. And as Florida locals, we know that in times like this, our very own communities can benefit most from comprehensive music therapy support.

Regardless of your location, financial situation, or reason for seeking therapy, we’re eager to assess and support you on your journey to prioritize wellness for yourself or your loved one.

The Benefits of Music Therapy in the Wake of Tragedy

Many of our clients face disabilities or setbacks that can make it even more difficult to cope with the impact of disaster, like hurricane damage or emotional trauma. The House of Music Therapy strives to provide options that make it easier to cope and thrive throughout all of life’s setbacks or stressors.

Our practice utilizes an initial assessment that helps us identify and target specific support needs for each individual. This means that things like recent trauma or significant events - including things like hurricanes, displacement, or loss - are taken into consideration ahead of treatment, allowing us to prioritize the healing journey every step of the way.

Through music therapy, we’re able to play a critical role in an individual’s well being and overall satisfaction with life. We’re able to help those in need regulate and cope in an engaging, lighthearted, impactful way. Curious about whether or not music therapy could benefit you or a loved one? Don’t be afraid to reach out!

Our clients see direct benefits of music therapy, and many of which report decreased stress levels, increased optimism, easier self-regulation, enhanced communication and social skills, pain management, and so much more. By prioritizing these needs and concerns, we’re able to help our clients make room in their mindset to work through additional challenges when needed, which is especially important in the wake of tragedy.

Our Music Therapy Offerings

We proudly serve clients across South Florida communities including Fort Meyers, Miami, Orlando, and beyond. We bring the positive impact of music therapy to our clients in a number of ways, allowing us to tailor support to each individual’s needs based on the music therapy assessment mentioned above.

Each client’s plan looks different, and follows a unique timeline to address specific goals over time, including recommended short- and long-term objectives. We also provide clients with a recommended service location and any materials they may need.

We offer both virtual music therapy and in-person therapy to meet varying comfort and risk levels of our clients at this time, and understand that for some, the risk of exposure to COVID-19 or other illnesses is a huge concern. Our therapists are committed to keeping clients safe during in-person visits, and follow COVID-19 protocols including mask wearing and proper hand washing.

Virtual music therapy has been an instrumental resource for families who have been displaced as a result of Hurricane Ian, enabling them to benefit from traditional music therapy services from the comfort of their home, hotel, or wherever else they may be during a transitional phase. We know that for many, life looks a little different now than it did before Ian, and we work to make sure your access to therapy isn’t compromised as a result.

Our group music therapy programs help attendees and students address social skills and improve positive thinking while enjoying a musically-minded atmosphere. Group music therapy sessions are only offered in certain locations, and you can contact us to learn more about getting involved or joining in on the fun.

We strive to offer varying support options in order to meet our clients where they are in their therapy journeys and ensure that there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Financial Support Options for Music Therapy

We know that music therapy doesn’t seem like an approachable option for everyone. Unfortunately, there’s a misconception that therapy is reserved for high income families who can afford to pay out of pocket or up front for music therapy services. We’re thankful - and honored - to be able to provide affordable music therapy for Florida families who need it most.

We work closely with popular medical programs - including Medicaid and Sunshine Health - to make it easier for our communities to access the resources they need most. We’re also proud to work with Florida’s Family Empowerment Scholarship to provide crucial opportunities for K-12 students to benefit from music therapy.

If you have questions about how to leverage these programs or resources, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! You can view additional scholarship or program options on our website’s home page. It’s our goal to ensure that our services are available - and affordable - for all. From children with disabilities to older adults living in care facilities, our services and approaches are flexible, nimble, and applicable to all situations, financial statuses, and locations across the South Florida area.
